When fear sets in, the mind, and the world around us, appears to be in chaos - fractured and uncertain, dangerous and daunting. Today I find myself mindful of 'The Litany against Fear' as used by the Bene Gesserit, the key social, religious, and political force in Frank Herbert's fictional Dune universe. "I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain." For those of us who feel concerned, today could be an optimum day in which to take a step back, gather our splintered selves, and vastly reduce our contribution to the disarray and disorder of the collective opinions regarding the Presidential inauguration. Today also appears to be a good day for me personally to step it up a gear and allow the fear, my own and that of the collective, to pass over me and through me and recognise that its path is Chaos. This path brings change I am assured. “You must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star”, suggested Friedrich Nietzsche. The Bene Gesserit charge us, “Fear is the mindkiller, fear is the little death that brings total obliteration.” To survive, it would seem that our fear, and facing it, allows the Path to be carved, aiding us to become who we are, and who we were born to be. Yet for many of us, permitting fear, and not being afraid of it, seems hard - our fear of chaos, of change, of destruction, prevents us, holds us back, and dims the light of our potential in insidious and subtle ways. We hold onto the energy of ‘order’, even if it doesn’t seem to be working. The litany has been a useful psychological and magical tool for many since its inception, including myself. These words allow me (us) to create a foothold in the collective psyche, and find that space BETWEEN chaos and order, where Life, and Death, are one - the place of Unity and Non-Separation. This is the space where the I, remains, fear-less and magnificent, and where we can avail ourselves of unlimited possibilities, birthing the bright, glittering ‘dancing star’ that casts our Light into the world. We might not get the world we want, but we will certainly get the one we need and it is there, where our Light must, fearlessly, shine.
